Local Case on Business Creation – Individual Assignment Guideline

This individual assignment is an opportunity for the students to work on a local entrepreneur/startup to familiarize themselves with issues related to starting a new venture. Each student will prepare a case on business creation after interacting with a local entrepreneur. At least some part of the information will be collected from primary source, i.e., from the life experiences of an individual working in the local industry; this primary source can be supplemented with information from secondary sources, if available. When secondary sources are used, references (in the business press, internet sites, company document, etc.) should be provided.

The firm may be based in any city of Bangladesh or in special circumstances; a student may work on a foreign company where you can access primary information. Emphasis should be given to two or more of the following issues – the marketing plan, the business strategy, raising risk capital and business model canvas of the business.  Highlight or put extra emphasis on anything novel in your case – e.g., rapidity of growth, success in the face of overwhelming obstacles, the personal characteristics of the founder, an unusual method of market entry, unique financing choices, unique aspect in location, et cetera.

The suggested length of the case is approximately 1200-1500 words; not including references, appendices. In addition to what is mentioned above, the case should have the following when appropriate:

  1. 1)    Add 2-4 discussion questions at the end of your case. Discussion questions should capture the most interesting aspects of your prepared case.
  2. 2)    List your secondary sources of information with complete references or URLs as appropriate.
  3. 3)    Appendices (Attach as much supplementary information as you can)
  4. 4)    A scanned copy of the business card, photos or copies of other artifacts of the business, and/or formal contact information of the founder(s) so they can be contacted if needed.

Do not forget to create a top sheet in your submission. This page should include title of the case, name and ID of the student who prepared the case, course name, course code and section number for which the case was prepared and any other information deemed appropriate.

Only a written submission of the case is required. No printed copy is needed. Please note that your submission will be checked for plagiarism.
