Rationale:
The aim of the two written assessments is to support the development of critical thinking, writing skills, and reaching logical conclusion, while exploring a current hot topic in psychology.
The aim of Assessment 2 is to assess first step of critical thinking: gathering the information, known as critical analysis or critical data extraction. The extracted data will be used in Assessment 4.
Task:
Background: Imagine a person who is about to retire comes to you because they are concerned about their upcoming retirement. During the therapy session, the topic of volunteering in retirement is raised. You do not know much about the effects of retirement and rather than provide inaccurate information, inform the patient that you will do some research and discuss the pros and cons of volunteering in retirement at the next session. During the following week you conduct the research to explore the effects of volunteering on health and general wellbeing.
The tasks
In this assignment you will extract the critical data from three set scientific papers investigating the effects of volunteering in older adults.
You will follow the critical analysis procedures explained in the Week 2 tutorial and the self-pace learning module in the Critical Analysis folder.
To complete this assignment, you will:
use the library databases to locate the three set papers using the information below.
copy the data extraction tables used in class and mi to record your data.
record the critical data in the table and then copy the data into a dot format in a word document (see the micro tutorial on dot points for instructions).
Include a title page and reference page in APA 7th conventions.
The set papers
The information for the set papers are not in APA 7th. You need to write these references in APA 7th conventions.

Preparation:
There are several resources available to complete this task. Remember that this is a new skill so give yourself time to practice.
A Week 2 tutorial will focus on the how to read a scientific paper and extract critical information.
A micro-tutorial on critical analysis and data extraction in the Learnline folder, Critical Thinking Skills. The micro-tutorial includes activities which walk you through the process and procedure for reading scientific papers, locating critical information, and extracting critical information,
In addition to these resources you can upload a practice critical analysis on Padlet (the link is in the Critical Thinking Skills folder. Only use the papers set in the folder. Do not use the assessment set papers for the practice. If the Assessment papers are uploaded, they will be deleted.
Use the Critical Thinking board to ask critical analysis questions.
If needed, review the APA References, the APA Page Formatting Guide, the APA Student Title Page micro-tutorials found in the APA folder.
